January 12, 2011Afternoon Tea isn’t High Tea

I don’t know if it bothers you when others refer to an item or event incorrectly.  I know that when I see an establishment advertise “High Tea” that they mean “Afternoon Tea” or “Proper English Tea” but it bothers me because they are teaching those who read the advertisement the wrong name for the event.  “High Tea” is not high-class.  It is historically a reference to the supper given to children by their nannies or a simple sandwich and perhaps a cup of soup.
